This sculpture represents a moment in the lives of Mary and Elizabeth. One way of imagining this scene is that Mary, knowing of her pregnancy before she was married felt the possibility of being socially outcast, and Elizabeth, knowing her pregnancy with John the Baptist when she was too old to conceive also felt herself estranged from people. Mary retreats to be sheltered by Elizabeth, the only person she knows and trusts that would understand. They greet each other and the baby suddenly leaps in Elizabeth’s womb. In this sculpture the youthful Mary feels the baby leaping in Elizabeth’s womb as the elderly Elizabeth blesses Mary’s womb.

This seemingly simply pose took a great deal of time to work out. While working on it for many months, I wrote a journal of my creative process as a sculptor.
