Naomi and Ruth represent two women, any two women, any two in friendship, setting out on a long journey together. Naomi has begged her daughter in law to return to her own people, but Ruth refuses, saying:

“Entreat me not to leave you
Or turn back from following you.
Where you go I will go,
Where you lodge I will lodge.
Your people shall be my people
And your God my God.
Where you die I will die
And there I will be buried.”
Ruth: 1:16-18
